Spontaneous Combustion?

On July 8, 2008, there was a fire at the landfill. The investigation into the fire was limited to attributing its cause to spontaneous combustion, the origin of which does not seem to be an important detail either for Sogepu or for Town Councillor Masetti, by whom the official explanation given by Sogepu was deemed to be more than satisfactory. Some of the members of the City Council of Città di Castello as well as a majority of the minority members remained, however, unconvinced by the investigation. In response to a letter from Town Councillor Ciliberti, Sogepu President Bernicchi proudly emphasized the speed with which the fire was extinguished once the alarm had been sounded by an alert citizen.

But what would have happened without the prompt action of this citizen? Although we appreciate the efficient and timely intervention of the Fire Department, we would prefer to count on action taken to avoid shuch dangerous incidents rather than on action taken to contain them. The next time the fire brigade might not arrive in time to avert an environmental disaster.

Sogepu and some politicians continue to insist on the necessity of doubling Belladanza. But the fire is the umpteenth demonstration of how difficult it is for Sogepu to correctly manage the landfill even in its current size and the irresponsible manner in which it handles problems that - like the fire - can endanger the safety of the citizenry. One can only imagine what dangers the doubling of Belladanza would bring….
